When Yuvaisms used to be poll plank

It''s just not there... Students continue to mill about Panjab University campus, thronging the Student Centre and Law department. If girls are catching up on inter-department gossip with each other during break time, the guys are busy discussing their latest gizmos or newest set of wheels. A peep here, a listenin there... Unlike other universities, election fever catches on only a few days before the polling takes place here. Chandigarh Times checks out what''s playing on the voting minds.

The ongoing Senate poll is a non-issue. Students in general are hardly concerned about them, and fewer know what''s actually going on!

"We''re freshers, at the University Institute of Legal Studies. We don''t know what our involvement in the whole Senate polls procedure should be," Munmun and Priya chorus.

Similar is the case with a group of ‘veteran students'' on campus But mention the student council elections and some comprehension dawns.

"Oh those guys have been coming around, promising us things like the quick completion of our department building and also taking note of hostel problems like irregularities in water and electricity supply," Surina, Deepti and Bhavna are eager to let on.

But none of them seem hopeful. "These are just vote-garnering tactics, who will bother once the elections are over?" a knowing Tina questions. They already know how the system works!

Boys on the other hand, can''t wait for the election euphoria to start. "It''s like a huge festival. We don''t have any classes and sitting and listening to the wannabe student leaders is total timepass," grins Gursimran Singh, a student of the mass communications department.

What makes the whole process more fun is that these students are supposed to be covering the elections as part of their department assignments. "We get to spend time at the girls hostels besides making fun of the speeches made by all the candidates," Munish Shekhawat is all set for the fun during campaigning days. Fun? Once upon a time elections meant cause and isms...
